Parents are upset over the fact that schools are sending home “fat letters” stating their children’s BMI is above a healthy percentile. They feel like these “fat letters” can damage the children’s self-esteem and lead to eating disorders. In September 2013, the Massachusetts state legislature introduced a bill that would ban the collection of students’ BMI data. BMI is an inaccurate measurement of obesity because it does not take into account where fat is stored or the amount of muscle mass. It can also be said that BMI is a tool to measure whether or not the child has a weight problem.
