Kids over the age of 10 are most likely to get a phone. Kids having cell phones has been happening for a few years now. The main reason for a child to have a phone is so that they can contact their parents or guardians in case of an emergency. Many parents don’t believe their children should get it because of their own relationship with their children. Kids of the age of 10 should be able to get a phone because they may need it for an emergency, so their parents can monitor them, and it also can teach them responsibility or if parents want to get them one. Kids should be older to have a phone because they can get really distracting at their age. “Kids should wait until they are older to have a phone. Cell phones will distract kids at school. I've seen kids playing with their phones during class. Plus, kids can use a teacher's phone or a pay phone if there is an emergency.” (CARPENTER 1) Cell phones can get in lots of trouble if they are using the phone in class. Cell phones will distract the child at home and anywhere they will be. Lots of people believe that it is very rude to have the phone out, even though the child might have it out for an emergency. Tracking shouldn’t be used on children because they need privacy too. "By giving me this GPS tracking phone, I think my mom has shown that she does not trust me, says Jessica. When I'm out with my friends, I always call my mom when I go to a new place, so she always knows where I am. I don't need to be tracked." (Summers 1) Parents want to track their child, but the child disagrees. The child should have a right to not be tracked. They don’t need their parents knowing where they are all the time. Sometimes everyone just needs some privacy, but the parents don’t agree because their child may or may not be in danger. Cell phones can get very expensive, which is another reason why children shouldn’t have phones. “Kids should not have a cellphone. A cellphone can get very expensive. When kids spend time talking and texting, they have less time for other activities, like playing outdoors with friends. Kids might be tempted to use their phones while they are doing homework, which can distract them. Using a cell phone in class can lead to big trouble. There's also the risk that cellphone use may not be good for kids' health.” (Wahl 1) Cellphones can range up to $1500+.
