Terrorism has been used many times throughout history by groups to scare nations and people into to giving them what they want. The point of terrorism and terrorist attacks is to try to control people through fear. This tactic has been used many times, by many groups, against many nations. For American people, terrorism was brought to the forefront of their lives on September 11, 2001 when four groups of terrorists hijacked four separate airliners. The hijackers took the planes and crashed them into several major American buildings: one into each tower of the World Trade Center, one into the Pentagon, and one crashed in an open field in Pennsylvania (its assumed target was the White House). Most American people are able to remember where they were and what they were doing when the two planes hit each tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The effects of this attack are still felt today; after the attack, the U.S. government took many steps and took many precautions to keep anything related to 9/11 from happening. One of the biggest steps they took was reworking the TSA (Transportation Security Administration). Today, you can find the TSA in every airport in the United States, along with many other international ports and borders. The increase in rules and regulations has made many forms of transportation more peaceful and safe; however, this is at the expense of simplicity and convenience. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security was another government organization that was created and established after 9/11. Plenty of terrorist organizations adapted to NATO’s tactics and new, modern terrorist organizations have been formed and built. In 2001, Al-Qaeda and the Taliban were the most threatening of groups, and though those groups still exist today, their numbers have been cut down significantly. Currently, some of the most threatening groups include ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) and Boko Haram. ISIS is probably the most commonly known extremist group today. They operate in Iraq and Syria mostly, but frequently carry out attacks all over the globe. ISIS has claimed responsibility for recent Paris attacks, downing a Russian passenger jet, setting up two explosions at a peace rally in Turkey, and many more attacks (Yourish, Karen, Derek Watkins, and Tom Giratikanon. "Recent Attacks Demonstrate Islamic State’s Ability to Both Inspire and Coordinate Terror." The New York Times. The New York Times, 16 June 2015. Web. 08 Dec. 2015). The most recent of attacks involving ISIS included a married couple entering and shooting up a regional center in San Bernardino, California. In the attack, 14 people were killed and though the FBI knows the couple was inspired by and supported ISIS, they have no proof that links ISIS to planning and supporting the attack. Boko Haram is a similar terrorist group that operates primarily in Niger and Chad. Boko Haram is responsible for many smaller attacks that are carried out in mostly
