Why College Athletes Should Get Paid

Big name college athletes as in, Terrelle Pryor, Johnny Manziel, Jameis Winston, and most recently Todd Gurley were fined and suspended for signing autographs or selling their autographs for money. College athletes should get paid enough to buy clothes, food, supplies, and that money could come from getting a piece of money made off of their merchandise. Some college athletes have no money to support themselves in college. The challenges college athletes face between their school work and athletics can be extreme. College athletes should be paid because of the amount of time they and the school put into practicing or playing games, more students would stay in college instead of leaving to the pros for money, the money that the NCAA has available,…show more content…
“In 2013 The National Football League announced that a record 98 college-football underclassmen, were making themselves eligible for the NFL draft in May”. (Borden) In college sports, nowadays you see one and done freshman all the time. They leave college after having a successful year, to go make money at the pro level. Paying athletes would help more students stay and get their education, instead of leaving before graduating. It would also help out the athletic program of any college, because this would keep around their superstars longer and allow teammates to build an even stronger bond and friendship. This would also help the school a lot. Schools can also make money on how well they produce smart kids or good grades through their classes. Having more students stay through graduation would boost the school's scores tremendously and have a great effect on the school's culture. The graduation rate for student athletes has dropped tremendously over the years due to improper treatment. Well, for one, not every college athlete receives a scholarship. Many teams have walk-on athletes or just regular students who have to pay for their tuition. The students who get scholarships, don’t get to use their scholarships for clothes, food, drinks, etc.. College athletes get penalized for receiving any benefits that come from anyone else, besides their family. Also, the ones that get scholarships are still busy with school and their athletics, some can’t afford clothes or more important food. “We as student athletes get utilized for what we do so well. We are definitely best to get a scholarship to our universities, but at the end of the day, that doesn’t cover everything. We do have hungry nights that we don’t have enough money to get food and sometimes money is needed”.
