Jay “Great” Gatsby "Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter — tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther . . . . And one fine morning — So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." (180) F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby, an American Classic taking place in the Roaring Twenties, following the life of a wealthy and mysterious young man named Jay Gatsby through the perspective of his neighbor and friend, Nick Carraway. When Gatsby first decides he wants to be reunited with Daisy he asks Nick through another person to set it up. When the day comes that Gatsby is finally going to see his long lost love he becomes panicky. Minutes before the set time of the lunch Gatsby worries that she won’t show up and gets prepared to leave but Nick calms him down and tells him to wait a while. Once Daisy arrives, Nick gets up and opens the door to welcome her arrival. They get inside and Gatsby is no where to be seen but then there is a knock at the door and then Gatsby is revealed to be the visitor. There’s an awkward silence and then Nick excuses himself to escape but Gatsby follows. Gatsby tells Nick that it’s a disaster and starts to feel overwhelmed by embarrassment. Nick breaks through his panic attack by snapping some sense into him. He confronts him about his actions, “‘You’re acting like a little boy,’ I broke out impatiently. ‘Not only that, but you’re rude. Daisy’s sitting in there all alone.’”…show more content…
Gatsby reveals his upbringing to Nick, he explains how he was dirt poor which he disliked. So he left after dropping out of college and met Dan Cody and joined his 10 year yacht journey. He was cheated out of his inheritance after the death of Cody and went to join the military. Thats when he met Daisy and fell in love with her. After facing the heartbreak , even before heartbreak, he decided to make something out of himself and become wealthy and took advantage of prohibition and made connections. Gatsby did anything to escape his North Dakota life and make a newer and better version of himself, “His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people--his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all. The truth was that Jay Gatsby of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception of himself.”(98) Despite the means how he achieved his wealth, his ability to surpass poverty and make a name out of himself is
