In the short fiction “Where are you going, Where have you been”, by Joyce Carol Oates, the main character, Connie, is a highly sexualized sixteen year old girl who is led to believe that she is emotionally and psychologically ready for adulthood. Connie bases her idea of adulthood on the music she listens to, which is a highly simplified and romanticized version of adulthood.
