Contributions to Western Civilization “Strong minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, weak minds discuss people” (Socrates). Philosophy is just one of many cultural aspects by which the ancient Greeks impacted or shaped western civilization. The Romans impacted western civilization in many ways as well, including, government, military, and architecture. Both, the ancient Greek and Roman cultures, have shaped western civilization into what it is today. The forms of government that the Greeks and Romans had in place throughout their respective histories, have influenced western government and a lot of it is still in place today. This led to the reformation of the Roman army. Traditionally, the Romans used the Phalanx, which proved to be disastrous against the Gauls. During this time of reform, the Romans adopted Maniples and the Legion. Maniples consisted of a small group of soldiers that could fight as individuals or as a team. We refer to this team today as a “squad.” This proved to be a great success for the Romans and it would be another eight hundred years before Rome was defeated again. The Greeks gave us Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian columns. These columns can be found all over the United States today. In the southern states, these different types of columns can be found in old plantation houses, in particular. In most state capital buildings, including the White House, these columns can also be found. Furthermore, Roman innovation led to the building of some remarkable engineering feats that have survived to this day. The Romans used the ideas of the Ancient Greeks to implement their own engineering plans. Rome supplied itself with water using a system of aqueducts. The aqueduct at Segovia in Spain, built by the Romans, is 60 meters high in places. Another classic example of Rome's engineering skill is the numerous Roman roads that still exist today.
