Perceptions of tobacco use within societal groups are highly correlated with tobacco use. Cultures where tobacco use is viewed in a positive light tend to have a higher percent of smokers than those who view tobacco negatively. Perceptions of tobacco use tend to be highest among lower income individuals, males, and those with lower education achievement. These groups also tend to be the most common tobacco smokers, although there are some exceptions. Women, higher income individuals, and the more educated tend to have less favorable perceptions of tobacco and lower smoking rates.
