How Gender Stereotypes Influence Psychosocial Development of Adolescents? Introduction When human first discovered the difference between males and females, people started to have certain perception for normal and appropriate behaviours of males and females. These perceived truth slowly becomes a norm and formed a psychosocial construction which is known as gender stereotypes. (Pearlstein 2014) In fact, it has altered in different ways over time and generations and every generations came up with different prospects of behaviour of how males and females should behave. Adolescents are susceptible as they are in the phrase of self developing and most of them do not have fully developed traits. One of the reasons is because the not fully developed brain due to the lack of connections between neurons. However, future researchers are suggested to carry out their study with different sample of participants to avoid generalization. Gender stereotypes may have both positive and negative impacts on adolescents but according to this study, majority impacts are negative influences as gender stereotypes tend to be prejudicial. Gender stereotypes limit adolescents' and potency as they alter individuals' self concept, self view, self evaluation, performance and also influencing their emotions. (unwomen.org 2011) In another word, the research above had proven that gender stereotypes bring negative impacts on individuals' growth and development. Chittenden (2014) had suggested some ways to counter negative gender stereotypes. Everyone from the society has responsibilities in this matter as they should avoid seeing the world in blue and pink, stop encouraging and discouraging people from doing things on gender-based, empower the positive characteristics that are commonly over-developed in one gender in another and so on.
