Online harassment causes offline distress! According to Hinduja and Patchin (2010), approximately 25% of students from 11-18 years old reported that they were both a cyberbully and a victim at some point in their lifetime. The increase in technological advancement has given birth to a new form of bullying over the Internet, known as cyber bullying. Cyber bullying has become a prevalent issue as teenagers squander an escalating amount of time using technology that keeps them connected to other technology-users daily. Teenagers who cyber bully employ various methods to harass their victims, through instant messaging over the Internet, social networking web sites, text messaging and phone call. Many people have failed to realize the extreme effects that this issue can have and teens. As a result of this problem, teenagers that are harassed online face serious consequences and adverse effects. These constant occurrences have influence the downfall of individual’s self-esteem, self-perception and psychological well being and can cause an individual to suffer from depression, along with the possibility of committing suicide. Technology is ever-growing and will not come to an end soon, therefore strategies have been put into action to prevent cyber bullying; this research paper highlights five main preventative measures that can be used to curb cyber bullying, including, education, positive social networking, anti-bullying programs, adult supervision and speaking out against the…show more content…
If awareness of cyber bullying is risen in schools, communities and religious places amongst the youths and more so the public, it can help put an end to this severe problem. In order to do so, persons must first understand what cyberbullying is, how it is caused and the effect it has on a teen. With the use of seminars, workshops, community meetings and campaigns, awareness of cyber bullying can be spread. Having experts, researchers and persons who have overcome being victims of that issue is a plus in educating the audience of the problem. Once the serious consequences a victim faces are understood, cyber bullying can be put to an end.
