The Kite Runner introduces many unknown features of Afghanistan. I barely knew anything about the country. Many things surprised me in both good and bad ways and changed my perspectives. By reading this book, I was able to learn some aspects of the country’s culture and the country itself. In Afghanistan, there are two ethnicities; Hazara and Pashtun. Hazaras are inferior to Pashtun. The reason is that Pashtuns are Sunni Muslims, while Hazaras were Shi’a (Hosseini 9). For long time, the Pashtuns had persecuted and oppressed the Hazaras (Hosseini 9). In my native culture, Korean, kids respect adults and adults respect other adults who are older even by a small amount. However, in Afghanistan, all that matters is ethnicity. In the book, Ali,
