The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Hybrid And Electric Vehicles

The hybrid vehicle is common in the market. It helps reduce tailpipe emission by having two mixtures of engines: an internal combustion engine and an electric motor powered by an electric generator. When the speed of the vehicle is moving at a low rate, the electric motor will automatically engaged and will provide horsepower to the vehicle so the internal combustion engine is not in use so tailpipe emission is at its minimum. The electric vehicle is also common. It gets energy from an electric grid. Since electric vehicles do not require burning fuel, therefore, tailpipe emission is non existent. These are the reasons why people like to buy the hybrid and electric vehicles as an environmentally friendly transportation. However, consumers…show more content…
Plug-In Hybrid and Electric Vehicles seem like a better version of conventional vehicles; however, the pollution of creating these cars is harming the world as seriously as a conventional vehicle. Plug-In Hybrid and Electric are also at a great disadvantage when it comes down to comparing the distance and refueling process. Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicle can make up the disadvantages that Plug-In hybrid and Electric have. Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicles are a better version of electric vehicles. In order to charge the electric motor, instead of using the fire-coal plant, it needs hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity from which no greenhouse gases are created. When the Fuel Cell converts hydrogen to electricity, it only creates water and heat, consequently, it will not have any tailpipe emission. ("How Do”) Like other electric vehicles, the Fuel Cell has the idle-off program; the fuel cell engine will be shut off when it stops at the traffic light. Which means, fewer emission are released into the air when the vehicle is not in a transit…show more content…
In the U.S, electricity generation is based on burning coal which releases carbon dioxide into the air. Copper is one of the main resources to produce Hybrid and Electric vehicles' batteries. However, mining copper produces Acid Mine Drainage which harms the environment and wild animals, making them unable to live near construction area due to the toxic that are caused from mining copper. Also, in certain areas, companies are obliged to deforest in order to place their machines in the mining area to dig for copper. Apparently, consumers approve the manufactuerś action of deforestation by purchasing their products. Although Lithium-ion batteries are more efficient than the Lead Acid batteries, they are often tossed into the landfills when they are announced that they are no longer in a good shape for car use. Little do people know, throwing away Lithium-ion batteries can start an underground landfill fire, releasing carbon dioxide and toxic chemicals into air for years and years without going out because a lithium-ion battery contains cobalt. However, a majority of the batteries that are thrown away are able be to reused for other purposes since researchers found that the battery itself is still in good shape. They can be used for backup battery storage.
