The book “ Understanding Social Enterprise “ advocates the students, entrepreneurs and business leaders to develop a critical understanding of social enterprise through an exploration of the relationship between theory and practice. The book is very nice because it provides the readers a critical explanation as it engages with social enterprise theory and practice. It also provides a rich source of knowledge and learning. The organizations of the social economy include cooperatives , mutual societies , and charitable / voluntary associations that produce goods and services. There are three sector model of the economy, the first one is the private sector that deals with the market supply and demand. The second is the public sector that deals with the public interest and purpose like providing social care , education , transportation , social security and justice system. The last sector is “the third sector”, these are the non - profit sector , charity sector , or voluntary sector. The third sector is the organizations that is independent and free form state or commercial intervention. These associations aim to have a good society by helping and orienting the less fortunate people in starting generating income. In the USA it defined as non – profit sector while in the Europe it is defined as a social economy and international cooperative movement. The US and Europe has boundaries and different styles in the social enterprise. The Europe is more on collective action and it is based on labor movement or government response to social issues while the US is more on individual action and the entrepreneurs are the responding to the social issues. Social enterprises transcend traditional sector boundaries and have the potential to form a social economy with distinct characteristics and language to the social economy, and its link to other economic sectors. Social enterprise is a useful umbrella terms for any democratic organizational form or activity where people are not in it for the money but still generate a financial surplus.
