Social construction may be defined as a social mechanism or a category which has been created by society. It may either be a perception which is created by an individual or an idea which is constructed as a result of the culture. The present society has created many harmful constructs. In this paper, I will discuss the social constructs of race and gender and the problems associated with each. In addition to this, how social constructs came to form the basis for discrimination and prejudice will be discussed. Had there been no social construct against gender and race, both men and women would be considered equal in all societies. What are prejudice and discrimination? Prejudice may be defined as an incorrect or negative attitude or opinion toward a member of another group or race. It is the assumption made about someone without having any adequate knowledge of the person. Prejudice can lead to a negative impact on the emotional well-being of a person and his/her sense of self. Discrimination, on the other hand, is the action or behavior done by a person against individuals because of the prejudiced beliefs. Because of the social construct, men are considered superior to women. They are given higher priority in society, and the women are discriminated against. Because of the social construct, there has been a mentality that one gender is superior to another, and that there are tasks that can only be done by a person of a specific gender. Social constructs curb the rights of the women and are one of the reasons that they have to face discrimination (Fiske and S.T, 2000). It is because of the social construct that a person begins to discriminate on the basis of gender; when society asks a person to discriminate against a person of a different gender, the person complies. Similarly, racial discrimination is something that is not in a person’s blood. When someone observes other people discriminating against people on the basis of race, they often follow suit. Therefore, it is the inheritance of the social construct which has led to discrimination and prejudice.
