Ashlyn Upah Research paper Professor Gates Types of Serial Killers According to the American heritage dictionary a serial killer is “A person who attacks and kills victims one by one in a series of incidents.” You never know who could be a serial killer or a sociopath because these people are you friends, family, and co-workers. Serial killers come off as friendly, charming, and are good at convincing you into anything or convincing you that they’re telling you the truth. It’s hard to pinpoint a serial killer. What gets them caught is one slip. We must realize that at any time, between twenty, and five hundred serial killers are active in the United States, killing up to three thousand people a year. Contrary to popular belief they are not insane (serial killer). A FBI agent Greg McCrary spent most of his career investigating serial killers, said “the reality is they are not crazy, they are not insane in the terms of being legally sane. They understand very well that what they are doing is wrong, but they do it anyway and they try very hard to get away with it”(qtd. In wuebben). These killers are known as sociopaths. A sociopath is a person with a personality disorder manifesting itself in extreme antisocial attitudes and behavior and a lack of conscience, they are characterized by a hunt of immediate satisfaction in criminal acts, drug addiction, or sexual prevision (serial killer). You would think that a person with these traits would be easy to identify. As McCrary said, “there is no one profile of a serial murderer” (qtd. In wuebben). Nothing specific will give all of them away. The killers usually act with a different personality. Organized killers are usually very intelligent and plan their killings. They kill in one place and dispose the bodies in another. They tend to work until they are caught, and they are typically very quiet and never suspected of crimes. They hunt their victims like animals and perform their kills quickly (serial killer). A well-known organized killer was Ted Bundy. Between 1974 and 1975 he killed about 35 and 50 women in 5 states. An intelligent and cold man, he is known for putting his arm in a cast and tricking his unsuspected victim into helping him to his car where he would bludgeon her to death with the cast
