High School Sponsored Sports Are a Benefit to Students Everywhere It’s not the games you win, it’s the fun, hardworking days spent in a sport that makes it so important. Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of FieldLevel, Inc., Kai Sato states in his essay that sports help build characteristics that are very valuable in the workplace. Sports can help build many helpful characteristics such as a hardworking drive for success, a competitive attitude, and being a good team player, that will benefit you throughout your life. In his essay Kai Sato states, “In 2002, a study by mutual fund company Oppenheimer revealed that a shocking 82% of women in executive level jobs had played organized sports in middle, high or post-secondary school. Moreover, nearly half of women earning $75,000 identified themselves as athletic” (96). Usually you think of women having lower paying executive jobs. However, this percentage shows that a hardworking, competitive attitude in women can help break down gender barriers in the workplace. Academics are thought to be the reason employees get good jobs. Researchers Bowen and Hitt found through the “Becoming A Man” program that, “According to a 2013 evaluation conducted by the Crime Lab at the University of Chicago, Becoming A Man - Sports Edition creates lasting improvements in the boys’ study habits and grade point averages. During the first year of the program, students were found to be less likely to transfer schools or be engaged in violent crime. A year after the program, participants were less likely to have an encounter with the juvenile justice system” (98). You follow the footprints of those mentoring you. Bowen and Hitt proved this thorough research that if a child is mentored by the right person, they are more likely to be a better adult. For example, the point of the “Becoming A Man” program is to help build disadvantaged kids follow better footprints than those around them.
