In response to “Politics in the English Language” by George Orwell, found in “The Norton Reader: Shorter 13th Edition” on page 260, I found that many of the solutions he proposes for becoming more aware of the way one writes are very useful for everyday life. Orwell says, “Never use a long word where a short one will do.” I think this piece of advice means that it is not necessary to us a long, complicated word if the word does not help to clarify the message one is tying to get across for its reader. I chose to focus on this solution because when I am revising my own writing, I find myself looking for simple words that can be replaced by more complex ones.
