Brody Jennings Spanish I 16 September 2015 The Puerto Rico Flag Situated in the Northern Hemisphere between the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean lies the US Territory of Puerto Rico. This small island sits just about 1,000 miles south east of Miami, Florida. As a commonwealth of the United States, Puerto Rico works much like any US state. As such, the territory of Puerto Rico has many official items- including an official flag. Accompanying the official Puerto Rico flag are many traditions, holidays, and rules of etiquette. The Puerto Rican flag is fairly simple in design. It is rectangular with three horizontal red stripes, two horizontal white stripes, a blue triangle, and one white star. While three versions of the flags conception exist, it is undisputed that the flag entered use in December of 1895. The creator behind the flag is said to be unknown. Some accounts say that the flag’s colors were chosen to match the colors of other republics in Europe and America. On the other hand, it has also been said that the flag was created to be an inverse of the Cuban flag for use by the Cuban Revolutionary party throughout the mid-late 1800’s. Puerto Rican flag code is very similar to US flag code in that it must always be flown above other flags (cities, states, etc.). Additionally, the Puerto Rican flag must never touch the ground and must be retired respectfully when it is no longer in proper condition to be flown. Once a flag can no longer be flown, flag code calls for it to be respectfully burned (Vexillologymatters.org). Puerto Ricans celebrate Flag Day on either June 11 or December 22. Generally, the Puerto Rican flag is accompanied by Puerto Rico’s national anthem, La Borinqueña ("Puerto Rico Flag").
