Psychology is more than just sitting on a couch listening to people's problems or diagnosing them with a mental illness. In reality, it consists of the study of the mind as well as observable behavior of an individual. The study of Psychology is like an umbrella that spreads into different realms from clinical to research Psychology, or from developmental to abnormal Psychology. However, no matter which direction of study is taken, writing is an absolute crucial aspect for success in the field. In order to fully understand the role writing in Psychology, I interview Dr. Abby Meyer, behavior neuroscientist. Writing will be a part of my studies and career. For Psychology majors, Academic writing is a preeminent part of achieving a degree in the field. Dr. Meyer mention that in order to do something beyond teaching high school or elementary, a master degree was preferred and it requires writing a mater’s thesis, “If you want a master’s degree, you write a master's thesis. It is a much longer study than anything you would ever write for your classes.” This includes generating study and caring it out by collecting data. Once the data is analyzed, it presented to commie of elites in the field of Psychology who will than decide to approve the essay and presentation as a milestone. I plan to continue my studies and earn a doctorate in Psychology from a university. “While you are in graduate school, get as much writing as possible. Find a mentor the let you do all the writing you need to do,” Dr. Meyer advised me about what I should focus on while studying to achieve my academic goals. Along the way I will take classes like history of woman, or relationship dynamics where I would be given several writing assignments to complete the courses. In addition, Dr. Meyer suggested that it would be important to try to get as many publications as possible while I am working on my study. For example, getting an article publish in journals like Psychology Today or even branching out other publication and working with Sociologist. Taking an initiative of generating my own side writing projects apart from the required essay from classes would improve my chances of getting accepted into graduate school.
