The Patriot Act is an act passed by the Bush administration after the events of 9-11. The Patriot Act is an overhaul of security in America and especially in its airports. What makes the Patriot Act so controversial is what it did to violate the constitution. It violates Americans privacy in an unpresented way. Americans lost pretty much all freedom in airports and we are now being watched by the Government in ways that we could have never imagined. We are being tracked, scanned and listened to at all times. We never really know when we are alone anymore. We now live in a “Big Brother Society” that reminds a lot of people about George Orwell’s “1984”, a book about an alternate past where the presence of the government is extreme, and people…show more content…
Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shattered steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve. America was targeted for attack because we're the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining.” (Bush, para 4) This is very emotional and really speaks to how America was feeling after the attack, people were shaken and scared and wanted a way of feeling safe. And here is President Bush talking about the new Patriot Act “We will come together to give law enforcement the additional tools it needs to track down terror here at home. We will come together to strengthen our intelligence capabilities to know the plans of terrorists before they act, and find them before they strike.” (Bush, para 31) In conclusion the Patriot Act is a hotly debated topic between conservatives and liberals. But in the end it comes down to freedom and government power. It may be inevitable that one day the government will have more power than before, I doubt the founding fathers saw America turning into what it is now, but whether that is a good or bad thing, we have yet to
