Have you ever falsely judged something, someone, or a group, through the lens of a single story? That single story that you heard about someone or something is actually you are stereotyping, criticizing and analyzing. According to the article “The Danger of Single Story” by Chimamanda Adichie, there are many dangers of accepting a single story. These dangers include robbing people of dignity, making our recognition of our equal humanity difficult & emphasizing how we are different rather than how we are similar. Without knowing the full story about someone or something, you are allowing that single story to be your truth. That is what makes believing a single-story a dangerous game to play. A single-story can rob people of their dignity. When you are telling or believing a single-story you are not allowing yourself a chance to get to know that someone or something. Sometimes you can find yourself treating people differently based on a single story. In the article, Adichie got a new houseboy who’s name was Fide. The only thing her mother told her about him was that his family was very poor.
