Columbine, Parkland, Garfield, Richland, Frontier, Alisal, Sandy Hook, Aurora. This is a short list of some of the most known school shootings in the history of the United States. Gun control has been a very controversial topic for a while now but after the recent shooting at Parkland High school, the issue has been getting more attention. The number of school shootings has been increasing and some people think this is because of our gun laws. In my opinion we should not ban guns. The second amendment states that we have the right to bear arms. Yet, I do not believe common people in society should have access to military grade guns such and the AR-15, the gun used in the Parkland shooting. This could help disarm the attackers faster, and maybe even prevent these shootings. Security guards are specifically trained for this type of work, therefor a lot of people would feel safer with them there. A total of 43% of schools have armed guards somewhere on their school grounds. The number of shootings in these schools is significantly less than those of schools that are unarmed. This says a lot about the use of security guards in schools. I also believe the security guards being there will show the kids that they are protected and safe. If any of these schools had armed security guards on duty during the shootings, chances are, the shootings would have been averted. Or the casualty figures would be much reduced – at least. The truth is that to disarm an armed individual, you will need another armed individual. So, armed security guards will help disarm and foil the plans of any criminal. These guards also can observe the students when they aren't in class, monitoring the aggressiveness. MOst school shootings where a student was the shooter, involved a child who was dealing with depression or some other mental illness. This lead to them needing to vent their anger, therefor shooting up the school. Finally, with these armed individuals the students might speak up more. In recent years there have been numerous acts of violence carried out on children of different grade levels that involved guns and knives. Some school districts have taken the situation into their own hands and invested in a walk-through metal detector for the main entrance of their school. Such precautions have been taken at elementary, middle, and high schools. Some schools have reported a decrease in weapons being found on students, along with a decrease in violent behavior. Also, most children wouldn't even try to bring a weapon to school if they knew they would most likely be caught. Schools need to take all possible measures to ensure the safety and security of students and staff. Having these security measures put in place would also insure parents and students that the school has done everything in their power to protect their
