On February 14th, 2018 Nikolas Cruz entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida and killed seventeen students and teachers. Cruz was armed with an AR- 15 and has now been charged with seventeen cases of premeditated murder. Within minutes Cruz took seventeen innocent lives, he destroyed their families, and he shook his entire community. The survivors of this shooting have risen up and demand change to prevent tragedies like this from reoccurring.The students are fighting against the National Rifle Association (NRA), and demanding more gun control. But you can obtain guns illegally as well, even if we were to say it was illegal for him to own that gun, he’s already planning on killing people, which is extremely illegal. Do you think it being illegal for him to own a gun is going to stop him? Now of course I hear “But it would make it harder for him to obtain a gun.” Yes, it definitely wouldn’t be as easy, but it would be possible. What’s to stop him from stealing his grandpa’s hunting rifle, the gun of a friend or a friend’s parents, you can obtain anything illegally. Even a gun, and though stricter gun laws need to be in place, it will slow him down, but it won’t stop him. Of course, there is the attempts to raise the legal age to own a gun, but that adds another problem. You can fight for our country at 18, and use one on the enemy, but you can’t come home and own one to protect yourself until you’re 21, how is that fair? Would we still allow our soldiers to own guns, and if not how are they expected to fight? In the end, arming our teachers may be the only way to keep our students safe. You can’t rid the earth of the evil inside it, and we can’t rid our country of school
