The definition of prejudice is an opinion or judgment that disregards the facts. (http://www.yourdictionary.com/prejudice). Examples of prejudices are disliking someone because of their religion/race which comes under the term racism, liking someone because they have brown hair, etc. Prejudice against culture: Tris is 30 years old and, she works at Greenacres residential care home for elderlies. She feels uncomfortable because of the offensive comments care workers are making about her Mexican culture. She speaks to her therapist regarding the matter. She tells her therapist that, although she likes the job, the only solution to avoid getting discriminated by care workers is to quit from the job. It puts a huge impact on individuals for the rest of their lives. In Residential Care homes there are quite a lot of cases where the service users get discriminated, abused, and neglected critically by care workers, as they can’t cope with the stress and anger they get because of service users. Abby lives in Greenacres residential care home. She is an 85 year old service user with disabilities. She screams all the time because of the atmosphere around her. Care workers feel disturbed because of Abby’s behaviour. Once when Abby refused to eat, her care workers abused her a lot, and decided not to give her food for a long time, leaving Abby all alone in her room. After quite a while Abby kept calling her care workers repeatedly for food as she was hungry. But unfortunately no one heard her and therefore she was crying and shouting for food over the past 2 hours. After 3 long hours her care workers came in and gave her food. This shows how Abby was being discriminated by care workers, by being left alone for 3 hours to starve herself. In these cases these actions need to be reported to the police or someone who can deal with the care workers well such as whistleblowing or reporting to the…show more content…
An example of this might be patients not allowing their GP/nurse to carry out with any medical treatments if they think it’s not necessary for them to take any medical treatments for the time being or never. Offering inappropriate treatment or care meaning not caring or valuing the needs of the individual. An example of this might be not taking the care values of the individuals into consideration. Giving less time when caring for an individual than needed meaning not taking the individuals health into consideration. An example of this might be discriminatory behaviour, the individual may be discriminated because of their diverse needs. In Health and Social Care there are Care Values which are to be followed by healthcare services. Care Values are the most important values which underpin the values of care to be passed by care workers to service users for their safety and wellbeing. Care workers ensure that the diverse needs of service users are supported through the Care Values. There are five Care Values in the Health and Social Care sector, and these are; Confidentiality, Dignity, Respect for the individual, Safeguarding and Duty of Care, and Person-Centred
