Positive Coaching Translates to Positive Outcomes As a result of the enactment of Title IX in 1972, athletic participation for females has skyrocketed. For high school female athletes, participation has increased from merely 294,000 to over 3.2 million in 2011-2012 (NFHS, 2012). This resulted in more females being afforded the opportunity to gain the positive physical, social, emotional and cognitive benefits that arise from sport participation. Teams where athletes play for a positive coach perceive themselves, their teammates, coaches, and skill improvement more positively (McPartlin, 2010). According to the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) there are three tenants that make up the Positive Coaching Mental Model utilized by youth coaches. They are: redefine “winner” and move away from the “win at all cost model,” fill emotional tanks giving truthful, specific praise, and honor the game (PCA, 2013). Positive coaching is a philosophy that can not only translate to wins, but also positive sport experiences and development outside of athletics (Gould & Carson, 2000; McPartlin, 2010). At my current position with a 14 regional volleyball team, I believe positive coaching is necessary. This is because the context is ideal for positive coaching because it focuses on deliberate practice, but also fun. Positive coaching as a leadership style for youth coaches is essential because it allows players to develop socially, emotionally and cognitively.
