Personal Statement: My Experience In The Sports Field

Ever since I was a child, I have always been fascinated by the sports field. Growing up exposed to this world played a part in developing what was first only curiosity and interest into a true passion. I was given the opportunity to experience three Summer Olympic Games as a child, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008, and live the unique atmosphere of the games, as well not only see perform but also meet amazing athletes from all over the world. As I grew older, my admiration for major sports figures grew. I was particularly impressed by their performances as human beings, and their ability to push their bodies past their limits, as well as their struggle towards the achievement of excellence. Furthermore, I was afraid I would be choosing the easy route if I ventured deeper into the sports field, as it was a world I had already grown up in, and wanted to develop other interests. Having lived in China for one year before, I was still quite fascinated by Asia and its diverse cultures, and so decided to try my luck in Japan. I was accepted in the English program at Waseda University to study Intermedia Art and Science, which represented an unknown field for me. Although I enjoyed studying science and technology, I quickly realized that perhaps I wasn’t in the best field for me. I was more interested in studying the Japanese language and exploring the different parts of Tokyo and Japan than what I had originally come to study. I was particularly motivated to perfect my Japanese language skills, as not only did I find the classes fun, but also in view of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. I could not stop myself from thinking that if I ever ended up in the organisation of these games, speaking Japanese, French and English would be a great advantage.
