It was time for bed which meant it was story time. I would lie down in my huge bed, all cuddled up in my fuzzy blanket. I patiently waited for my mom to be done with washing the dishes. We started by choosing a book from the many books on the shelf. Our shelf was filled with vivid multicolored books. All stacked from the tiniest to the biggest. She began to read the English words with her Mexican accent trying not to mess up. Her soft and silvery voice was comforting. I began to yawn and felt the sleepiness hit me, which was normal. I would rub my eyes and try to stay awake. I felt my eyes slowly closing and before I knew it, I was knocked out. Now let's flash back to the preschool times. As a Mexican and American it was a mass of work for a kid to learn two different languages at once. Meaning, I had to go to school speaking English then I’d go home and speak Spanish. It was a struggle, learning to read in English. My teachers would tell me to read to a parent for homework, so I’d go home and read to my mom. Reading with my mom was difficult for me because she didn’t understand English. I wasn’t sure if I was reading precisely because I never had anyone to correct me and my mistakes. There were moments when I didn’t know how to say a word. I would sound out every little letter, trying to figure it out by myself, but asking my mom was no help neither. When she spoke English most of the time I barely knew what she meant. For example, she couldn’t pronounce the TH- sound instead of saying there it sound more like dere. There were the sounds she couldn’t pronounce, like how some Americans can’t roll their R’s like for the word perro. We would sit every day on the round wooden table to do my homework. I would set out my homework and a book that I chose from the book shelf. She was pretty strict with my homework. I remember her saying, “escribe bien, no hagas las letras feas”. She taught me to always have nice handwriting. Indeed, my mom wasn’t good with English, but she was supportive in helping me learn to
