What makes a hero? Does it mean doing great deeds? Or is it just someone doing something you admire? Many people have their own definition of what a ‘hero’ is. A hero to most is someone who has courage or who has risked or sacrificed his his for others. A hero is considered a man, often of royal ancestry, who is exceptionally clever. A hero is a leader who had not only physical strength, but mental strength as well. They’re usually someone that got themselves into danger, and in cases where the average man would suffer, the hero would have enough stamina to survive. Odysseus displays all these qualities throughout his travels home, and abroad. Throughout the story, Odysseus goes on many different adventures, thus showing his abilities.…show more content…
Before he decides to enter the cave, he decides to bring along his magical bottle of wine. When he gets to the cave, the Cyclops could sense that Odysseus and his crew were in his cave and traps them inside. When Polyphemus eats one of Odysseus’ men, Odysseus yells at him for not showing hospitality and says that he in turn will be punished by Zeus. Odysseus thought of using his bottle of wine then, but thinks about what is best, and realizes only the Cyclops could open the door to the cave. Odysseus shows his cunningness when Polyphemus asks him his name, and he replies Nobody. Odysseus waits till the next day. When the Cyclops comes back in Odysseus gives him the wine, making him drunk, and causes him to fall asleep. Odysseus finds a wooden staff in the cave, and sharpens it by the fire. While the Cyclops was still asleep he took the staff and screwed it into the Cyclops eye, which blinded him. Odysseus uses his creativity when he and his men hid underneath the Cyclops’ sheep at night. He also knew what his next step must be, and he had the courage to pass all the obstacles only to meet his beloved wife and son again. He even refused the suggestion to become a god and live with the prettiest goddess, Calypso, because he wanted his wife even without knowing if she waited or had been remarried. A fatal flaw is a flaw that has a negative impact on the hero and their journey. An example would be how Superman is sensitive to/hurt by kryptonite, or how Percy Jackson’s fatal flaw (from the movies and books) is his loyalty, and how he’d risk his life for for anyone. Odysseus' flaw is his love towards women. On more than one occasion he was unfaithful to his wife, Penelope, by sleeping with other women. For instance, while Odysseus was in Circe's island, he promised to sleep with her if she reversed the spell she had cast upon his men. This demonstrates that Odysseus is a hero because he has a fatal flaw which is one of the characteristics. Odysseus' fatal flaw is being with women and being unfaithful to his wife. This prevents him from moving on and achieving his goal, which is to go home to Ithaca. Odysseus' flaw is shown several times throughout his journey/the story. For example, while he was in Calypso's island and after Hermes had told Calypso Zeus' orders Odysseus and Calypso made love. Odysseus is a hero because of his fatal flaw being portrayed every so often. This makes him a hero because most heroes, have something/a flaw which holds them back on their journey. All heroes encounter an issue/flaw in their plans that they must step past in order to reach their goal. Therefore, Odysseus is a hero because he frequently shows that he has a fatal
