Aaron LongUlysses, a war hero and a king of Ithaca, he was a man of great legend. Making his mark in life by his great success as king, and by winning the Trojan War. His journeys being made intoa book called “The Odyssey” which is world renowned. The character of Odysseus can be described as many things, but what fits him the best would be characterized as shrewd, intelligent, crafty, and eloquent. Odysseus is characterized as shrewd in this passage because of his great knowledge in sailing. Odysseus was not just a king and war hero, but he was also a man of the sea loving to sail, and see new places as it says in the passage. “Tis not too late to seek a new world. “Myself not least, but honored of them all- and drunk delight of battle with my peers, far on the ringing plains of windy Troy.” (Paragraph 1, line 15.) Being clever as he was having his army leave, leaving a wooden horse as a gift to Troy’s king, but hollowing the middle out as a secret compartment where he and his well-trained soldiers hid. Waiting until night when the Troy army was done with their victory parties to sneak out, and take them all out, winning the war, becoming a hero and a legend. The king Odysseus was also depicted as an eloquent man in the passage Ulysses by the opening sentence in this passage. “ It little profits that an idle king, by this still hearth, among these barren cages, matched with an aged wife, I mete and dole unequal laws unto a savage race, that hoard, and sleep, and feed, and know no of me.” (Paragraph 1, line 1.) He is eloquent by the way he talks about everything, he is very knowledgeable and fluent being proper in the time period with what he says, and doing so throughout the rest of this passage. Ulysses describes Odysseus as all these things in the passage being shrewd, intelligent, crafty, and eloquent, but he was all of that and more in his extravagant life, seeing all the lands he had seen sailing, leaving home for over 30 years, and being king during all this.
