Three months is a long time to live away from home. Coming to Thessaloniki, Greece I was truly unsure of what kinds of people, customs, and activities I would encounter. Yet, since arriving in this historical city I have seen how diverse and interesting this unique city is. One of the first experiences I had when I arrived to Greece in September was when I went to Aristotle Square on a Saturday night. To my surprise, the area was filled with young, gregarious residents. At first, I thought there was a special event taking place in the square. Yet, when I asked one of the young men who was with his group of his friends what was happening, he simply told me, “This happens every weekend. We gather here and just hang out together.” To me, this was shocking. While I knew that Thessaloniki was voted the youth capital of Europe in the year 2014, I would not have believed that so many of them would be in the same location just to enjoy the beautiful weather and the company of others. I was looking for a bus to take me to the police station outside of Toumba Stadium. I had no idea where to go, and did not have anyone speaking Greek near me. When I asked if anyone could help me, this older woman who spoke no English was the first to respond. She pulled out a piece of paper and a pen and wrote me step by step instructions on how to get to the police station. However, when she saw that I had a look of confusion on my face, she grabbed my hand and led me onto the bus. While we were not able to communicate at all, she guided me all the way to the station. This was a moment that I will never forget. Not only did this woman go out of her way to help me, a lost American who only knew a few words of Greek, she genuinely cared about my well-being and made sure that I was
