Medical provider is a respectable job, but not always glamorous. It is a pressure cooker dealing with difficult patients’ demands, filling out mundane paperwork, and making numerous phone call to insurance company. Moreover, they must maintain the patient satisfaction scores and quota mandated by the workplace and adhere to the ever-changing, complex healthcare law and regulations. However, these hardship does not deter me from my aspiration to become a physician assistant (PA). I want to belong to a team of talented, selfless, and dedicated people that fight for patient’s lives on a daily basis. That was indeed challenging and rewarding. My public service interest is satisfied. However, the human interaction is missing. At work, I feel more fulfill working on public health assignments that incorporate tangible interactions like the Jail Health project. With the goal of improving inmate’s overall health and safety, I worked along with physicians, observe their triage and exam processes. During other times, I was grateful to participate in Special Initiatives that bring valuables health resources and services to the public. Going out to Houston's most under-served communities, we provide free oral health care through Project Saving Smiles, free vision screening and eyewear through See to Succeed, fresh produce and nutrition education through Community Nutrition program, or STD screenings at the Hip-Hop for HIV concerts, to name a few. These field experience gave me a chance come in contact with many healthcare worker and people, expose me to different medical conditions, and gain valuable healthcare experience. I am humbled and thankful for the heartfelt moments with my patient and appreciate the chance to know some on personal levels. I am also able to see medicine at its power and weakness: facilitating a successful childbirth for a woman with a broken amniotic sac while unsuccessfully saving a heart attack patient. In both of those moment, I was just a few feet from their bedside. Accepting that medicine and science are not omnipotent, I promise myself that if I am become a PA, I will keep trusting, persevere in the patient and my team, and be compassion with patient’s
