Prostitution should not be legalized. Prostitution, defined as the process or employment of engaging in sexual relations with someone for money is illegal, and there are many reasons why it should continue to be so. To begin with, prostitution poses health risks not only to the buyer but also to the seller. Many deadly diseases and infections, such as herpes, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia and HIV/AIDS can be transferred from person to person through unprotected sexual contact. Second, prostitution leads to the human trafficking of women, and children. They are brought from different countries to serve as prostitutes in brothels. Most of these women are abused everyday, sexually, mentally and physically. If it is not by customers it is by their pimps. Holman states “Prostitutes report high incidences of abuse even in countries where prostitution is legal and regulated,” (Holman 117). In order for pimps to make money they set a quota for their workers. If they do not meet that quota they are beaten as punishment. Pimps have complete control over them and take advantage of their necessities. “ Prostitutes exists in legal and illegal environments in largely the same way—prostitutes are controlled and often beaten by pimps and brothel owners who have complete power over the women’s finances and well-being,” (Holman 118). In fact, this would only increase the demand. Holman points out “ Customers often want unlimited access to a variety of women who are ethnically and culturally diverse” (Holman 115). Holman also adds “ This constant demand for new and different women is one of the primary drives behind the international trade for women” (Holman 115). Also, since prostitution would be legal, buyers would not suffer consequences by soliciting a prostitute. This does not change the fact that these women will not be abused.
