In the Middle Ages, civilizations needed a defense system to protect them. They had knights, just like in today’s society we have soldiers. Overtime the role of these knights were modified to fill the needs of the society. The beginning of knighthood started off being an alliance for men who could afford armor and horses. Its men were nobles in the 11th century, along with freemen and craftsmen. Any man who had resources to the proper training and equipment for becoming a knight could eventually enter that class. Knighthood was not did not have strict rules about which men could enter at that time. The strong influence of Cluny monks began in the 12th century and added a new aspect to knighthood. Horses were used in war before, but soldiers would dismount before attacking the opponent. An advancement was made when knights remained on horseback in combat. This allowed the knights to fight more effectively, by bracing oneself and charging the enemy. It was a very powerful military improvement. A knight not only must have the strength and courage to fight in combat, but also have a courteous side to his persona. This was the Knight Code of Chivalry. The code was a system of morals that went beyond the battlefield. Knights behold qualities like bravery, honor, courtesy, and respectfulness. Truth was the foundation of chivalry, for a man who lies cannot be trusted. During the First Crusade, knights fought completely for their lords. When Pope Urban II wanted to reclaim the Holy Land, he and his followers knew they had to receive support from the knights. Christianization of the knights began across Europe and the sword symbolized the cross of Christ. The knights had two reasons to fight in the Crusades. One reason was for their earthly lord that needed them to fight and kill. Another reason was for their lord in heaven. To be a Crusader, was to satisfy the earthly lords while serving the lord in heaven. War was not thought poorly down on, but as a way to wealth, status, honor, and most of all an adventure. A Middle Age knight is like a modern day soldier. The goal of a knight was to protect their lord and their castle, like a modern day soldier would protect their country. Chivalry may not seem as important in modern day, but the traits listed in chivalry is what keeps countries at peace with each other. A knight had to train for combat, like a modern day soldier has to train in a boot camp. Although the different time periods have dissimilarity in tactics, both shared the same goal.
