1. As an immigrant from a working-class family, I have rarely met other students with similar backgrounds. While earning my Bachelor of Arts at the University of Alaska Anchorage, my awareness of being one of the few minorities in my classes only grew. As such, I realized not only the importance of graduate education in order to advance my own training, but to better serve the working-class families in the communities in which I have lived, worked, and studied. My personal experiences with changing family dynamics and loss, as well as my job, and class work provided me with a broader understanding of familial contexts and helped focus my interest in social work. In addition, it broadened my understanding of the role of social work in society.…show more content…
I chose to study psychology because processing psychological ideas was intuitively rewarding. Despite the exhaustion of studying late into the night after long work hours, I developed an affinity for academia that culminated my interest in social work and public health. Reviewing previous literature and attending undergraduate classes affirmed my desire to attend graduate school, where I could more thoroughly satisfy my intellectual curiosity. I want to empower others. Earning a Master of Social Work degree will prepare me to achieve my professional goals as a clinical social worker and learn the skills to diagnose and treat mental, behavioral, and emotional issues. It will prepare me to critically apply social work theory and methods to assess and intervene in situations involving individuals, families, and groups. Earning a graduate degree is evidence of persistence, determination, intellectual prowess, and the ability to handle challenging environments—all of which are sought-after qualities for me. I have demonstrated success in a long-term situation that requires stamina, discipline, leadership, and the ability to work well with others. Choosing to pursue a master’s degree takes initiative and commitment. The same traits, along with my newly gained knowledge and skills, will make me a successful leader and innovator when I complete my
