Importance Of Robotics

The two major activities I’ve done in high school were joining my school’s FIRST Robotics team, and competing in the science fair. In ninth grade my biology teacher convinced me to explore our school's robotics team. They had been trying to recruit girls, and I had decided that I aimed to have a career related to STEM, but I had little expertise in technology. I figured that the robotics club would be an excellent way to learn a thing or two. The first day I arrived I realized why the coach of the robotics team had been trying to recruit girls, the team was mostly all-male. Trying to overlook that, I joined one of the four sub-teams; out of electronics, manufacturing, and programming I chose CAD design. For the next two months I strove…show more content…
That changed my junior year; with two years of experience on the team, the teacher promoted me to a leadership role. Now it was imperative for me to interact with the other kids, and as being part of the leadership team I became a part of a close-knit group. The friendships I've gained would be an integral part of my coming of age. Part of maturing is appreciating how complex people are, and discovering that the world doesn’t revolve around you. Aside from lessons in technology and science, I learned a lesson in cooperation. Victorious robots aren’t built by one solitary genius in the basement (as Hollywood would have me perceive), but by a…show more content…
After weeks of explorative research, it was a documentary that first informed me of the incredible properties of spider silk; after that, I did even more research on my own. I’m an imaginative person, and I saw how spider silk could be a revolutionary material with its strength, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. The duality of spider silk as a fantastic fiber that could be found almost in any room yet the difficulty of obtaining it in useful amounts also fascinated me. All of this spiraled into a year long obsession of mine and led me to the completion of this project. I decided to try my luck at the Denver Metro Science and Engineering Fair. A couple years ago a kid from my robotics team got first place at the Denver fair. He then went to MIT. So I definitely fancied giving it a shot. Because the deadline for the science fair was four months ahead of the deadline for my school’s STEM program, I was driven to work twice as fast as my other peers, which would let me relax later in the year. Little did I
