In today’s society, people are constantly surrounded by technology and most have a smartphone in their hands throughout the whole day. At the same time, more children and adolescents have access to these devices and can download or stream television shows, movies, and music. Music most importantly can have extreme effects on children. For some, music is a type of escape that evokes desired motions such as a euphoric state of singing and dancing or a mellow, sad feeling resulting in tears. Music also helps form a person and is a way for someone to connect to others with similar tastes. Altogether, lyrics and melodies can influence children and adolescents in different ways that can aid or harm their development. The song I chose for review is “One More Light” by Linkin Park and the video accompanying it is a live performance dedicated to Chris Cornell from Jimmy Kimmel’s show. The lyrics and performance both add importance and meaning to the song. I believe that the lyrics can be interpreted in two different ways that can positively impact the listener. First way, and the band’s goal, is to provide comfort to someone who has recently lost a person close to them. The most influenced population might be males because as a society we place a lot of pressure on boys to possess the tough qualities associated with their gender. From a young age, boys are taught that they need to be strong and care discouraged from showing emotion. I think that is important that males hear songs that evoke emotion to know that they can speak about their problems and feelings without losing their “manly”
