For the reason why shallow foundation is commonly adopted in the construction of low-rise residential buildings. First of all, between shallow foundation and deep foundation, shallow foundation is more economical than deep foundations as it does not have to be installed deep into the ground and ground improvement works are not required. In general, it is usually the most economical foundation option. Secondly, low-rise buildings are usually few stories tall, around 4-stories. Therefore, to ensure the economic aspect, short construction time is required, and shallow foundation is a quick process compared to others in the construction work. Besides, shallow foundation can resist ground water absorption and prevent unequal settlement as it is designed that the soil is not over stressed and the pressure on the soil under them is equal at all points.
