A career path that interests me greatly is being a family therapist. A family therapist is someone who provides counseling to families who are dealing with problems that affect their relationships. Many people turn to family therapists when the family conflicts become too difficult to handle alone. These conflicts can include children and teenagers reacting to problems at home by exhibiting behavioral problems, or families trying to recover from awful situations such as divorce, illness, or death. These therapists also help families with individuals that are struggling with problems such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and alcoholism. For the most part, effective therapy includes the use of sociolinguistics. Sociolinguistics is the study of how people use language within their culture to express status and context. Client-centred therapy is a humanistic therapy in which the client plays an active role in therapy. The therapist creates a warm and inviting environment where the clients can express any feeling or thought without fear of judgement. Using this method, the members of a family can express their true opinions and feelings and with the truth on the table, the family can start to heal and mend their issues. One of the main goals of client-centered therapy is greater openness to experience. In addition, some of the changes that this form of therapy seeks to stimulate in clients are a better self-understanding, more positive and comfortable relationships with others, and an increased capacity to experience and express feelings at the moment they occur. With these changes, the relationships between the family members will not only surely heal, but also strengthen so that future grievances will not damage their relationships as
