Previous generations are disappointed in the ostensible mediocrity of millennials today. As the next upcoming generation, their approach to reaching adult independence is being viewed as inferior compared to past generations. Millennials extensive stay at their parent’s homes has led to unfavorable critics from past generations. Stereotypes such as being lazy, freeloaders, and selfish are tarnishing their reputation. The reasons for the extended stay however are overlooked. This unconventional approach to establishing a firm foundation to lead to stable independence has been misinterpreted. Today most millennials are staying home for extended periods of time to pursue higher education and build up finical stability. Staying at home allows for millennials to face the various challenges with more ease as they begin to seek higher education and eventually enter the work force. Although often very misunderstood, the nuanced decisions millennials are constantly making prove that their different approach to independence is effective. As an ever-evolving society it is clear that millennials are not lazy, selfish, and moochers, but rather an ambitious bunch that is challenging conventional wisdom in their own way. Staying at home allowed for millennials to place a proper focus on education which would enhance their work ethic in the future.
