3.2.2. Components of Life Skills According to WHO (1997), there is a core set or components of skills that are at the heart of skills-based initiatives for the promotion of the health and well-being of children and adolescents. These are: Decision making supports us to deal productively with decisions about our lives. This can have significances for health if young people actively make decisions about their actions in relation to health by weighing the different choices, and what effects different judgements may have. Likewise, problem-solving enables us to deal productively with problems in our lives. Substantial problems that are left unsettled can cause mental stress and give rise to accompanying physical straining. Creative thinking contributes to both decision making and problem-solving by permitting us to determine the available alternatives and various consequences of our actions or non-action. It helps us to look beyond our direct experience, and even if no problem is acknowledged, or no decision is to be made, creative thinking can help us to respond adaptively and with flexibility in the circumstances of our daily lives.…show more content…
Critical thinking will add to health by helping individuals to know and weigh the factors that affect attitudes and behaviour, such as values, peer pressure, and the media. Effective communication means that we are able to express ourselves, both verbally and non-verbally, in ways that are suitable to our cultures and situations.
