Introduction In this essay, it is going to analysis the environmental citizenship with two articles. The first one is Linking Environmental Citizenship and Civic engagement to Public Trust and Environmental Sacrifice in the Asian Context written by Jin & Shriar (2013) which mentions the relationship between civic participation on environmental issues and public trust. The second one is Shifting the Balance in Environmental Governance: Ethnicity, Environmental Citizenship and Discourses of Responsibility written by Agyeman & Clarke (2011) which focuses on the factors affecting the spread of environmental citizenship. This can become a way of disciplining the population to internalize a set of rules for their behavior and become self-governing (Schultz, 2001). If the government plays an active role in promoting the rights and responsibilities of people on environmental issues, peoples’ knowledge, attitudes and behavior on environmental problems can be raised. According to Arny (2012), contributions to environment can be reached by the implement of Green School program, where pro-environmental behavior can be promoted. Research has been done concerning Green education in Asia (Chapman & Sharma, 2001). It finds that environmental identities are created and pro-environmental activisms are encouraged during the lessons. For instance, WWF and Greenpeace are actively promoting global environmental conservation. News could also be a source but the reliability may not be as high as official reports. For accessing the effectiveness, I will first compare the percentage increase in the number of environmental citizenship in China and the western countries with the effort of IOs. For example, if the percentage increase in China is lower, I will then focus on the limitations or barriers such as ideologies and cultures, which resist the influx of the environmental citizenship concept. The journal article naming Environmental citizenship in Latin America: Climate, Intermediate Organizations, and Political Subjects by Broad, Orlove, Podesta, Traddei (2011) can be used as a case study for the Western countries. For China’s statistics, I will try to carry out qualitative interviews with Hongkongers and mainlanders asking them for the concept of environmental citizenship and how often they perform
