“The Fallen Angel” Gabriel Garcia Marquez is well known for his literary works, but there is a particular one that changed his career path as he went from journalism to Novels. "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings”; is a story of a man appears in a fishing village and is considered an angel because of its huge wings. The news of the arrival of this "angel”, (angel that had almost nothing) "He was dressed like a ragpicker. There were only a few faded hairs left on his bald skull and very few teeth in his mouth" (Marquez 357), is rapidly expanding among neighbors, and judgments are quick to appear. Even the priest is skeptical, " He reminded them that the devil had the bad habit of making use of carnival tricks in order to confuse the unwary”…show more content…
But all of this ends when a fair arrives in town and displays a spectacle of a woman who had become a spider for having disobeyed her parents. From this, the angel completely loses its reputation until one day, that without explanation, he takes flight and leaves town. In "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings", Marquez makes an excellent use of characters, setting, and plot to high point the lack of values and the materialistic essence of our society. The story presents primary and secondary characters that will play an important role for the development of this story. The angel itself, is presented as the most contradictory of them. Moreover, it is a story that causes extensive discussion regarding the symbolisms, which allows many interpretations. But the main message as social critique is presented by Márquez mainly on the characters. The angel serves as a representative of the unknown world and its treatment at the hands of the people shows its non-acceptance of the unknown. From my point of view, there is an analogy between this situation and today people overreaction to minor details, an how they omit opinions when it comes down to something important that affects us all. The values have been lost; people accept the daily crimes along worldwide. Here we have a serious problem, and if not resolved, will probably end up affecting our society in a way that never we have
