The first coincidence in the play that brings Romeo and Juliet together occurs when Benvolio encourages Romeo to get over Rosaline. During Romeo’s heartache Benvolio tries to comfort him by saying “By giving liberty unto thine eyes, examine other beauties” (1.1.222.). Romeo is heartbroken over Rosaline, so Romeo’s parents ask Benvolio to help him. Benvolio then tells him to open his eyes to the beauty in other women to get over his break up with Rosaline. If this event had not happened, Romeo would still be sad over Rosaline, and would be more focused on getting Rosaline back. He might have also continued to isolate himself, meaning he would not go to the Capulet party. This coincidence brings Romeo and Juliet together because Romeo remained open minded after what Benvolio said and he immediately recognized Juliet’s beauty and fell instantly in love with her. Romeo helps an illiterate Capulet read the invitation he’s given and as thanks he invites them to the party saying “Now I’ll tell you without asking. My master is the great rich Capulet, and if you be not of the house of Montagues, I pray come and crush a cup of wine. Rest you merry” (1.2.80.). As Romeo and Benvolio are walking as an illiterate Capulet servant needs to deliver an invitation but cannot read. He then asks Romeo to help him, not knowing he is a Montagues and as thanks for his kindness, he invites Romeo and Benvolio. If this event did not happen, Romeo would not know about the party and Benvolio would not push Romeo to go to the party and look for the beauty in other women to get over Rosaline.
