You are having a conversation with someone who has never seen a Spike Lee film, but they have heard that his films are racist and that they show whites as bad people and blacks as heroes in every one of his films. How would you respond to this person? Help someone understand what you have learned about the importance of seeing films that show more than one way to be American. Sometimes what we hear might not be true, and in order to understand the truth, we need to do deep research of it. Same thing applies to that person who has never seen a Spike Lee Films, but believes that his films are racist. In addition to this, I would also like to share my own experience to him/her. I will say him that when I first went to the class ‘American Film as Literature’, and my professor talked about racism and asked us what it means to be an American, I felt too much nervous. I was unsure how to respond on those topics. Eventually, I assume that the class is going to be all about the racism, and we will be seeing all movies related to it. Moreover, she mentioned that we would be watching Spike Lee’s movies through out the whole quarter. I did not know about him before therefore first one-two weeks were so difficult for me. Watching Spike Lee’s first movie, and hearing the racial topics, while discussing about it made me so much uncomfortable. In addition, when she explained that the movie displayed the problems that a black women faces and the discrimination and exploitation that the black people are facing from long ago, I also thought that probably the Spike Lee movies are going to be all about racism and white’s exploitation. However, when I watched his second movie and so on, I tend to analyze the content and find out the message the Spike Lee was trying to deliver. Thereafter, I never think him as before.
