Aaron Shepard was convicted of armed robbery, but has spent more time in prison for parole violations than the primary crime that was committed. When the documentary starts, Shepp is seen leaving the prison, with $200 and headed to meet his new parole officer. Throughout the documentary Shepp would have gone back to prison for violating his parole three times. Aaron Shepard makes the commit that he trusts few, and has few friends. When looking for a place to stay on his first night, he has only two contacts: his uncle and his friend Winfred. He does not get in contact with his uncle, and this is the only time he is mentioned, he gets lucky with Winfred, but it seems that Winfred is not the best of intentions, and is not in the best neighborhood.…show more content… This is probably due to the fact that he was never out long enough to get any offers, or search efficiently enough. It felt like while, Regina and Smiley were somewhat trying, Shepp was just stuck in his ways. The substance of alcohol is Aaron's choice of evil. A blurb that was shown gave the information that he started to drink much heavily after his first violation of parole in the documentary. Before that, I wrote down alcohol with a question mark, because when he was out with Winifred, they both had drinks in their hands, that were in brown paper bags, and I knew that that is a way of concealing what was being drunk, and usually that indicates alcohol. Regina in one of her interviews made the remark that, when your in once prison that your goal is to never go back, but once those prison gates open those goals seem to no longer matter, [because you are free]. This seemed to ring true for all the participants. They all said, that they wanted to do better, whether it was due to children, significant other, or for themselves, but being in prison and being in society is two different things. Smiley also made a connecting point that there is no program in prison to prepare for the outside.
