With deinstitutionalization and inadequate resources for the mentally ill, homelessness has remained on the rise. This has posed some interesting challenges for the criminal justice systems. The first issue being the rise in the cost requires to adequately maintain the criminal justice system. The cost of maintaining the criminal justice system has increased dramatically in the last 30 years. Between 1982 and 2006 the cost to the state, federal, and local funding increased by nearly six fold. A major amount of this cost has gone to the growth and increase of the U.S. prison population.
