Foils are important in literature, as they work together to advance the plot and the importance of the main character. Desdemona and Emilia are no exception. The two are prime examples of such, as they express completely opposite views of both men and the world, highlighting each other’s traits and portraying the differences between their characters. Desdemona has a positive view on men as she believes them to be treated kindly stating “O, these men, these men! Dost thou in conscience think,--tell me, Emilia—that there be women do abuse their husbands in such gorse kind?”(4.3.58-61).
