Slavery was not the main cause that led to the Civil War. The Civil War was more about the South that separated itself from the northern states (the Union).The South wanted to be separated and they wanted every state to have their own rights so that they would be free in their decisions. This was also called "state rights." It escalated after Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation which took effect on Jan. 1, 1863. But southerners did not see him as their president. The president of the South was Jefferson Davis. The slavery issue was definitely also a part of the Civil War that they fought over. Some of them even had a good life because they got everything what they needed. During Franklin pierce's time as president the South wanted to expand to the west because of agriculture, that meant that they are going to need way more slaves to produce their products. So the north was very upset with the south because they wanted to end the time of slavery in America and to unify the nation.The Nebraska-Kansas act took part in 1854 which was basically the idea to expand to the west with railroads. Although it repealed the Missouri compromise of 1820. But when the North noticed that the south want to own Kansas they rushed to Kansas and they fought against each other it was called "bleeding Kansas", it became a prelude of the Civil War.
