Cardiovascular disease also known as heart disease is a serious issue that is often overlooked. There are many forms of heart disease, such as, enlarged heart, coronary artery disease, heart attack, and sudden cardiac death, just to name a few. Heart disease is the number one cause of death amongst men and women in the United States, and is also a major cause of disability. It is caused by high blood pressure, high-blood cholesterol, obesity, and factors that are uncontrollable, such as family history, age, and gender. In preventing heart disease there are many things that can be done such as: getting enough exercise, eating a heart-healthy diet, and not smoking or using tobacco products. Last but not least, there are many treatments to cure the disease. Exercise is essential for a healthy life. Exercising on a daily basis helps reduce high blood pressure, can be a factor of weight loss, and reduces bad cholesterol levels in the blood. According to the American Heart Association, exercising 30 minutes a day, five days a week will improve your heart health and help reduce your risk of heart disease (Healthline, 2005). There are a countless number of exercises that can be performed. Cardio aerobic exercise is the best option in preventing heart disease. An asset to lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease, is following a diet that is low in saturated and trans fat, high in fiber, has omega-3, and is low in salt and sugar. Saturated and trans fats raises the level of bad cholesterol. Fiber is important, because it reduces the risk of heart attacks, and also helps prevent blood clots. Low salt will reduce the chance of high blood pressure, and low sugar will help prevent obesity.
