Assignment 1.2 Task 1a The organelles The cell membrane is thin and semi-permeable, and is found surrounding the cytoplasm of a cell. It is used to protect the inside of the cell by letting certain substances into the cell and by keeping others out. It can also aid in giving the cell its shape and structure. The cell membrane is made mostly of a mix of proteins and lipids. Lipids who help to give membranes their flexibility can make from 20% to 80% of the membrane depending on the membranes location and role in the body. Whereas proteins help the transfer of molecules across the membrane and monitor and maintain the cells chemical climate. The cell wall is found in most plant cells, fungi, bacteria, algae and some archaea but not in animal…show more content…
They convert energy into forms that can be used by the cell. This supply’s energy for the cell activities. Mitochondria is found in the cytoplasm and also helps in processes like cell division, growth and death. Ribosomes are made of two sub-units, a large part and a small part. These two units join together to make proteins in a process called translation. Unrestricted ribosomes tend to make proteins for the cytosol and bound ribosomes usually make proteins to be distributed outside of the cell or included in the cells membrane. The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) serves a selection of functions in the cell and is made of a network of tubules and flattened sacks. There are two sections if the endoplasmic reticulum called the rough endoplasmic reticulum and the smooth endoplasmic reticulum. The rough ER has ribosomes on the cytoplasmic side of the membrane which is why it is called the rough ER whereas the smooth ER lacks the attached ribosomes. Usually the rough ER is a series of flattened sacks whereas the smooth ER is a tubule network. The ER is large as it spreads from the cell membrane through the cytoplasm to the nuclear envelope. The rough ER makes membrane and secretory proteins. In certain white blood cells the rough ER produces antibodies and in pancreatic cells it produces insulin. Usually the smooth and rough ER are linked which allows the proteins to be transferred from the rough ER to the smooth ER to then be moved to other locations
